Making, looking and seeing the world differently

Art & DT

Overview

Art at Loughborough gives every child the opportunity to express themselves, think creatively and develop a genuine visual language. We want children to see themselves as artists - observing the world around them, experimenting with materials and techniques, and responding to the work of artists from a wide range of cultures and traditions. Our curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, rooted in skill-building and creative confidence in equal measure.

How we teach

Art is taught as a disciplined creative practice. Children learn key skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media, building on prior knowledge as they move through the school. Each unit is anchored in the work of a real artist, designer or movement, giving children a rich cultural context for their own making. Sketchbooks are used to explore, experiment and reflect. Children are encouraged to take risks, learn from mistakes and develop their own creative voice.

Impact

Children leave Loughborough with genuine artistic skills, a growing visual vocabulary and a confident, curious approach to making and seeing. They can talk about their own work and the work of others with thoughtfulness and depth. They leave with an appreciation of art's role in culture, history and everyday life - and with the understanding that creativity is a strength worth developing.

How you can help at home

Visit galleries and museums together - many in London are free. Talk about what you see, encourage your child to draw and make things at home, and celebrate their creative work. Noticing art, design and colour in everyday life helps children see the world through an artist's eye.
