Writing

Empowering children to write with confidence and purpose

Writing

Overview

Writing gives children a voice. Our ambition is to develop confident, capable writers who can communicate their ideas clearly, creatively and effectively. By engaging with rich language and varied forms of writing, pupils develop imagination, accuracy and resilience. We aim for every child to leave able to adapt their writing for different audiences and purposes.

How we teach

Writing is taught as an engaging, carefully structured process. From early mark-making to extended pieces, children are guided to generate ideas, develop vocabulary and organise their thoughts. Lessons provide opportunities for discussion, modelling and shared writing. Time is given for drafting, improving and refining work, helping children take pride in what they produce. Sentence structure, spelling and handwriting are taught alongside creativity.

Impact

Children leave Loughborough as skilled, confident writers who take pride in their work. They write fluently for a range of purposes, adapting language and style to suit different audiences. They show resilience as writers, respond positively to feedback, and understand that writing matters - as a skill, a voice and a pathway to opportunity.

How you can help at home

Encourage your child to write at home - lists, stories, letters, diaries. Talk about what they are writing and why. Read widely together, as reading and writing go hand in hand.
