Phonics & Early Reading

Strong foundations from day one

Phonics & Early Reading

Overview

Phonics and early reading are foundational. They help children communicate, understand the world and feel confident in their learning. We teach phonics in a clear, consistent and supportive way so that every child - whatever their starting point - can learn to read successfully. Phonics gives children the skills to read independently, share ideas and enjoy books.

How we teach

Phonics starts in Nursery and continues with daily, high-quality lessons in Reception and Year 1. Children read books matched to their phonics level, building confidence alongside skill. Any child who needs extra support receives targeted Keep-up sessions. As children progress, reading develops through guided and shared sessions using VIPERS, alongside daily opportunities to read for pleasure. Library visits, author visits and curriculum-linked trips enrich the experience further.

We use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to teach phonics in a clear, consistent and supportive way, so every child can learn to read successfully.

Impact

By the time children leave KS1, they are confident, fluent readers who can decode, blend and read accurately. They build a rich vocabulary, enjoy reading and can talk about and respond to many types of books. Our Year 1 Phonics results are above the national average - evidence that our approach is working.

How you can help at home

Read with your child regularly and practise phonics in short, fun sessions. Encourage them to say sounds clearly, blend words and spot tricky words. Praise effort, talk about stories, and make reading enjoyable.
