Science

Curious questioning scientists from KS1 to KS2

Science

Overview

Our science curriculum is designed to help children build a solid foundation of scientific knowledge and skills. We want children to be curious and excited about the world around them - to observe, ask questions and think critically about how things work. Our goal is to develop responsible, curious thinkers who can apply knowledge to solve problems in a rapidly changing world.

How we teach

Science is taught in an enquiry-based, carefully planned way, with lessons that build step by step. In our Phiz Lab, children learn to observe changes, spot patterns, carry out fair tests and research using trusted sources. In KS1, children explore the world through practical challenges and hands-on investigation. In KS2, they plan and carry out more complex investigations, applying scientific thinking to real questions. Science trips, workshops and visits from experts bring learning to life across the school.

Impact

Children leave Loughborough with a strong understanding of science and a wide range of transferable skills. They are confident in asking questions, exploring ideas and justifying their thinking. They leave well prepared for secondary school with the scientific knowledge and curiosity to understand the world - and their place in it.

How you can help at home

Encourage curiosity and talk about everyday experiences. Cooking, gardening and noticing the weather all connect to science. Ask 'What do you think will happen?' and 'Why do you think that?' to develop thinking skills. Reading books and watching child-friendly science programmes together helps make science exciting.
