Reading

Developing confident enthusiastic readers

Reading

Overview

We believe reading opens the door to learning, imagination and opportunity. Through exposure to a wide range of high-quality stories, poetry and non-fiction, we encourage children to explore new ideas, broaden their understanding of the world and develop empathy for others. We want every child to leave with a love of reading, strong comprehension skills and the confidence to express their thoughts and opinions about what they read.

How we teach

Reading is part of daily life at Loughborough. From their earliest days, children are supported to develop secure reading skills and a positive attitude towards books. As they grow, pupils take part in regular reading sessions focusing on understanding texts, discussing ideas and exploring vocabulary. Children listen to stories read aloud every day and are encouraged to read independently both at school and at home.

Impact

Children leave Loughborough as confident, fluent readers who are well prepared for secondary school. They build a strong vocabulary, think critically about what they read, and enjoy talking about books. Most importantly, they see reading as something positive and purposeful - a skill, a pleasure and a pathway to opportunity.
